Choosing your Laptop
Portability - consider one of the slim, lightweight notebooks available whose processors are optimized for mobility.
Size - Will you be using the laptop computer for everyday work or will you need a laptop computer that can handle graphic and game functions? A 15.4 is the standard size and will suffice for basic computer use. A move to a 17” will give you an improved visual area for manipulating graphics and playing games, but will use more power if used on batteries.
Memory or RAM (Random Access Memory) - is a vital consideration when purchasing a laptop computer. The more RAM you have, the better your ability to run multiple applications. Choose a laptop which has a minimum of 1GB; 2GB is better.
Graphics Card – For basic computer use the graphics card is not much of an issue as the onboard card will handle most jobs thrown at it, but for more serious work like playing games, watching movies and video editing you should choose a laptop which has one of the latest ATI or NVIDIA chipsets.
Hard Drive - today's laptops have very large hard drives and can store a lot of data. You will be hard pressed to fill one up unless you are storing large files like DVD’s.
Wireless - most laptops now have this feature built in by default.
Webcam – if you want to talk with video over the internet via Skype then choose a laptop which has a built in webcam to save carrying an external one around.
Price - depends on your budget. Laptop computer prices have been dropping dramatically for several years. Base models are now retailing for about £400 while top of the line laptop s with all of the bells and whistles included run for well over £1000.
Operating System – nowadays most laptops come with Microsoft Vista but you can still get Windows XP if you shop around.
Warranty - a standard one year warranty is typical while a comprehensive 3 year in-your-home warranty will cost you extra. Some offers include the extra warranty for no extra charge; shop around for your best deal.
